The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one of the most requested portrait locations I receive, and it’s easy to see why.
Perched on a hill just outside downtown Kansas City, the museum is known for its grand, timeless architecture and expansive sculpture gardens. The building features long stretches of warm limestone, dramatic columns, and towering entryways that feel straight out of a European city. The architecture alone creates an effortlessly romantic atmosphere that photographs beautifully in any season.
From a photography perspective, the location offers incredible variety. The iconic limestone facade reflects light softly, creating creamy, neutral tones that flatter skin and outfits alike. The tall dark wood doors add depth and contrast, while the surrounding terraces and garden paths offer pops of greenery and texture. As the sun starts to dip lower in the evening, the grounds come alive with golden light filtering through the trees and soft twinkle lights in the garden spaces.
It’s the perfect blend of elegance and natural beauty.
Gabby & Tyler’s Session
Gabby and Tyler’s session took place on a chilly afternoon. Winter sessions always come with a little bravery, and Gabby absolutely delivered in her silk dress. It may have been cold, but you’d never know from the photos.
We spent the evening roaming around the museum grounds, moving between the classic limestone columns, the open lawns, and the quieter garden corners. Rather than stiff posing, I guided them through a series of prompts designed to create natural movement and connection.
A little walking here, a spin there, a whispered joke between them.
Those moments are what bring portraits to life.
The Nelson-Atkins is a dream location for this type of session because there’s space to explore. Wide open lawns allow couples to move freely, while the architecture provides strong visual framing that makes every image feel intentional and editorial.
Even on colder days, the combination of stone architecture, soft winter light, and genuine moments between two people creates something really beautiful.
And Gabby and Tyler proved exactly that.
