A Natural Light Photographer’s Guide to Studio Portraits

If you’ve been browsing portrait inspiration lately, you’ve probably noticed that studio sessions are everywhere right now. From editorial maternity portraits to birthday cake smashes and modern branding photos, the studio aesthetic has become incredibly popular.

But if you’ve looked through my work, you might notice something a little different about my studio images. They don’t look overly “studio.” They still have that soft, dreamy, nostalgic feel that you see in my outdoor work. That’s intentional.

My Approach to Studio Photography

I LOVE studio sessions, but sessions with me might look a little different than studio sessions with other photographers—and that comes down to one big thing: light. I’m a natural light photographer. In my artistic style, sunlight provides the glow and softness that I’m always chasing. Natural light creates subtle highlights, gentle shadows, and skin tones that feel warm and authentic. That’s not to say I never use flash or additional lighting. I absolutely will when needed. But whenever possible, natural light will always be my primary source.

So you might be wondering… How Do I Shoot in a Studio If I Prefer Natural Light?

Great question. Because of my style, I specifically choose studios that are designed with natural light in mind. These spaces have large windows that allow sunlight to pour in and bounce around bright, neutral walls.

When the sun filters through the windows and reflects off the studio’s soft white surfaces, it creates the same luminous glow that I love outdoors—but in a controlled environment. This is why I schedule studio sessions during certain times of day when the light is best. When the sunlight is hitting just right, the entire room fills with soft, flattering light that feels effortless and natural.

Why Not Just Use Big Lighting Setups?

Some photographers rely heavily on strobes, flashes, softboxes, and large lighting setups—and there is absolutely a time and place for those tools. I’ve used them. I know how to work with them. And I still use additional lighting when needed to maintain high-quality images. But in my personal style, those setups often create a look that feels more “produced” than I prefer for most portrait sessions.

More importantly, they can sometimes feel intimidating. Large lighting rigs, stands, diffusers, and flashes can feel overwhelming for adults—and especially for kids. My goal during sessions is to create an environment where you feel comfortable being yourself. When the space feels calm and relaxed, the photos reflect that.

I specialize in capturing people as they truly are—whether that’s you and your spouse laughing together, your kids running around, or your family interacting naturally. Soft natural light helps keep the atmosphere easygoing and authentic. So while the sun isn’t the only light I’ll ever use, it’s always the one I start with.

Why Choose a Studio Instead of Shooting Outside?

Outdoor sessions will always have my heart, but studios offer some amazing advantages. Here are a few reasons clients love studio sessions.

1. Weather-Proof Sessions

We live in the Midwest, which means the weather can be… unpredictable. Cold temperatures, wind, rain, snow, and muddy parks can make outdoor sessions tricky during certain seasons. Winter especially can leave outdoor locations looking a little bare or brown. Studios solve that problem completely. Inside a studio, we have warmth, consistent light, and a comfortable environment for everyone.

No freezing kids.

No wind ruining hair.

No rescheduling because of rain.

2. A Clean, Timeless Look

Studio sessions offer a minimal, modern aesthetic that keeps the focus exactly where it should be—on you. Neutral backdrops, soft light, and simple styling create portraits that feel timeless. Instead of competing with busy backgrounds or seasonal changes, the images highlight genuine connection and personality. Because the setting is simple, the photos won’t feel dated years from now.

This style is perfect for:

• Family portraits

• Maternity sessions

• Couples sessions

• New branding photos

• Milestone birthdays

3. Popular Creative Trends

Studios are also perfect for some of the creative portrait trends you may have seen recently. You may have even seen hairstylists, estheticians, and other creatives posing in front of simple white backdrops with props like magazines or newspapers announcing their services.

For example:

• Editorial maternity sessions inspired by high-end fashion campaigns

• Birthday cake smash sessions with fun colored backdrops

• Modern branding portraits for small businesses

• Minimal couples portraits with a clean editorial feel

4. Comfort for Little Ones

For families with young kids, studio sessions can be a dream. There’s no long walking between locations, no worrying about mud or bugs, and no unpredictable weather. Kids can move around, play, and interact with their parents without the distractions of a busy park.

5. Perfect for Winter Sessions

Winter sessions in the Midwest can be beautiful—but they’re also cold. A studio allows you to wear outfits that might not be practical outdoors in January or February. Think flowing dresses, light fabrics, and cozy neutral tones without needing winter coats between every photo. Plus, the natural window light during winter months can actually be incredibly soft and flattering.

Whether we’re photographing your family, celebrating a milestone, or documenting a new season of life, I want your images to feel authentic—like a moment frozen in time rather than something overly staged.

Sometimes the best place to create that feeling is right inside a sunlit studio.
